Offensive TV show this fall

I just read about a comedy on NBC this fall about a call center being outsourced to India, and I think this is an insensitve and offensive premise, considering the state of the economy. You can watch the trailers on MSN if you want, I wasn't impressed. Shame on NBC.

When you just need a laugh

You guys probably know about this Web site, but it's one that can make me smile on the worst days. So, when you just need to lift your spirits a little, check out www.icanhascheezburger.com.

I don't get anything by mentioning the site, I just like it.

has anybody tried this?

I signed up to take a tax preparer course, just wondering if anybody has done this?

Kinda weird

Ok, I don't know if this was one of my good ideas or not, but on a sado-masochistic whim, I went to my previous employer's Web site and found a posting for a job, in a totally different dept, that I am very well qualified for. So I did the online app and skill tests, and I have an interview tomorrow. My thought is better the devil I know....

Secret shoppers - are they legit?

I replied to a craigslist ad for a customer service rep and got an email stating it was for a secret shopper thing and directing me to reply if interested - so I did. Got a 2nd email telling me I would be receiving a check for $2300 - I was supposed to cash this, keep $200 as my fee and the rest I was supposed to take to Western Union and wire it, then report back with my observations.

Cashing a check of that size just sounds wrong - why couldn't/wouldn't they wire the $$ to my bank?

A little personal good news

Just thought I'd share a little good news. I registered with a temp agency this week and they called me this afternoon to give me my first assignment. It's just a one-day thing, data entry, but it's better than nothing.

Is anybody else using temp agencies? Are you finding that they can keep you busy or are there big lags between assignments?

Mornings

Mornings are the hardest part of the day for me right now. Getting up and sitting at the computer, looking at the job boards, reading the news, just reinforces for me how much worse this could get before it starts to get any better.

I opted not to get involved with the insurance sales position, it was just to risky and ultimately too sleazy. I'm fine with that decision, at least this way I can still look at myself in the mirror and not turn away.

And today will be busy. Lots of census work to do, so I won't be hanging around here obsessing and moping.

Interview and then a second

Ok, had an interview yesterday, one of those group seminar things with a biig insurance company. The job is sales. Here's the thing: I have no sales experience, and this is a commission based position. They called me back last night to invite me to a second interview on Monday. I'm going to it, but i have deep reservations about commssion-only. Any advice??

good, or at least, better news

So, yesterday my crew leader told me I had ben selected to move from being a census enumerator to being a crew leader assistant. Less time in the field, more administrative responsibilites, same money. This is a good thing, and I start today. Yes!

going on three months now...

Ok, so it's going on 3 months now since I got laid off as part of a corporate downsizing. I worked for a BIG health insurance company, had been there 6 years, and was a very good employee - no big news, right? All kinds of good people get laid off/downsized while watching and scratching their heads over who got picked to stay. I managed to land one of the census taker jobs, which will carry me thru next month, and then unemployment again. I have good days and bad days now, sometimes all within the same day.
