You're not going to make big money. It's not going to make you rich, but taking legitimate market research surveys can put some cash in your pocket.

If you're interested in getting more serious about taking surveys, I have heard that you can actually make a living at it if you devote yourself to it full-time. You need tools to aggregate information. I've heard that this one is pretty good, but I have not used it because I don't want to spend much time taking surveys. (Disclosure: I am a paid affiliate of both SurveyScout and Palm Research. I stand behind both of them.)

I've been doing the Palm Research ones. They're kind of fun, and it is easy (if small) money. At the end of the month it'll be 50-100 bucks I wouldn't have had.

... Palm Research is not a scam. I checked them out thoroughly. They're a market research firm. They pay you a little bit. They don't share your info. They don't charge you a dime.
Survey Scout would be good for someone who wanted to devote a lot of time and energy to taking surveys, but they probably do oversell it a bit. You do need to work at it, but Survey Scout puts the tools in your hands (for a small fee that may be worth it to someone who wants to make a career out of mystery shopping and the like).

What I don't like about the taking online survey thing that it is very time-consuming and that you have to take similar surveys over and over again. It's better to develop something that you do once and then get paid over and over again. Resources on how to create your own product can be found on Dan Miller's website www.48days.com.
Try selling on Ebay e.g. That has worked out much better for myself.

Unemployment Compensation?
Would this be treated as "income" in the eyes of the unemployment compensation folks? I have been holding off on any freelance work since the State of Florida would simply reduce my unemployment compensation check by the amount earned. Instead, I have found that selling cold bottled water at busy intersections (in the tropical Florida heat) generates a nice sum (which is strictly "off the record" so it is not taxed or reported to the unemployment compensation folks)...

Survey Sites
I have a variety of LEGIT survey sites in my blog. Every site I have listed has actually sent me payment for surveys I've taken so I know they are not scams.
I certainly can't pay my mortgage from taking surveys but when you're unemployed every little bit helps!
