GM axes 10,000 more jobs

This is crazy. Didn't taxpayers just ante up $10 billion for GM a month ago? This doesn't bode well for the economic stimulus package.

I don't mean to sound negative, but is the American Dream officially over? What will emerge from this economic destruction? It seems to me that the way of life and expectations I grew up with -- the house in the suburbs, somewhat steady job, vacations, a decent retirement -- are gone. What comes next?

It seems like we're going to have to start doing things differently. We can't afford to wait for the government or politicians or CEOs -- leaders of any kind -- to get us out of this. People are going to have to step up and build whatever comes next. I suspect that what comes next will involve a lot more physical work for most people: growing food, sewing, building, repairing. Things like that.

These next 10 years are going to be tough, but I truly believe that it will turn out for the best. The question is, what do you do right now to keep your head above water? Jobs are hard to come by these days, and landlords and banks still want their money.

Pray for Michigan.

We've got lots of resources

We've got lots of resources to work with. There's so much work that could be done if we could actively develop trustworthy local and national community.

Last time I was unemployed I banded together with other folks, and we established a small community oriented non-profit business based in large part on donated sweat equity. It's still going.

At the same, time Americans would do well to get control of state and national governments. The primary goal should be a *way* more progressive and environmentally sensitive tax system. We have to stop relying on bogus financial arrangements that just complicate everything and prevent us from allocating resources for what really matters (security with long term economic viability).

You're right

I agree with you 100 percent. "Banding together with other folks" is great advice. One of the things we lost in the go-go McMansion boom was that sense of community and shared responsibility.

We need to figure out a way to leverage the resources you talk about, but the deck is stacked in favor of some none-too-nice interests right now.

When life hands you sh*t, make fertilizer.
