Good Friday and Cold Calling

Though I am not religious, around Passover/Easter, my thoughts always turn to matters of spirit. Good Friday is an especially reflective day for me. For one thing, I can't figure out why it's called "Good Friday." What's good about getting nailed to a cross while being forced to wear a crown of thorns?

That just seems so weird to me. If God loves us and wants to forgive us, why doesn't He just do that? Why put his son through torture for our sorry sinning asses? If I were God, I'd buy my son a BMW and send him to a nice college. Then I'd throw my hands up and be like, "These humans! Such nasty little monkeys! Where did I mess that one up? Oy. Whatever, forgive them." Then I'd point my finger down at Earth from my puffy perch on a cloud, and -- poof! -- it would be done.

Anyway, it's clear that the universe or God or whatever you want to call it helps those who help themselves. After paying my rent, bills, and taxes and being nearly broke again, it was time to drum up some new business. How do I do that? I cold call, and though I totally suck at it, it pays my bills.

So I spent yesterday cold calling and following up on previous cold calls. Didn't close anything. Just as I started to feel discouraged, at around 8:00 p.m. my Blackberry informs me that a new client on the left coast just got out of a meeting where it was decided to go ahead with a project that I had written off weeks ago. This morning I wake up and check my e-mail and find that two existing clients have more work for me. How's that for a weird coincidence! It's been a good Friday for me.

Things always happen like that for me: I direct my energy toward a goal and it's achieved... through some unexpected synchronicity, usually not directly through my own efforts. Do something and something will happen. Do nothing and something will still happen but it probably won't be as good as if you had done something. Does that make any sense?

It's too early to say -- I don't want to jinx anything -- but I seem to have survived unemployment.

Happy Easter or Happy Pagan Spring Fertility ritual or whatever you celebrate. May you be resurrected from the crypt of unemployment as the vine is resurrected each spring.

Good Friday

It's good Friday because it fulfills the many prophecies made in the Old testament about the Savior. There could not be the resection on Sunday if Jesus was not killed on Good Friday.

Yes, I'm aware of that

Was kind of joking...

But in all seriousness, of all the Fridays to dub "Good Friday," this one makes the least sense.

Now, the Friday that happens to be payday -- THAT's a good Friday.

The Friday that ends the school year -- paaartaaay!

Havin' the son of God get tortured and killed so he can get resurrected and save a bunch of nasty people who probably don't deserve to be saved... I just don't see much sense in it, let alone good.

When life hands you sh*t, make fertilizer.
