What to do when finding a job is impossible

I really don't know. Does anybody out there have any kind of answer to this?

What do you do to earn a living when the market is not demanding your skills?

Enough

Finding a job is never impossible. If you want work, you'll find it. Cut the loser crap, man.

Why are you so aggresive and rude with this guy?

Who do you think that you are to answer people that way? You are one of this stupid idiots of macho, superficial and snobs.

It pissed me off when I see how badly act people like you.

Be compassionate. be nice with people. You do not know what the future will be for you. OK.

Thanks

Yes, let's be nice.

Are you serious? Unemployment

Are you serious? Unemployment is at 9.1% in Tacoma according to today's paper but that doesn't reflect all the people who are ineligible for unemployment. Last month, the AFL-CIO put the figures closer to 16% nationally. So, there are unemployed people who can't afford to be consumers which adds to the downward spiral of the economy. The government can bail out banks but it won't bail out average working people. By the way, we still get stuck with the bankers tab. How is a person supposed to survive if he doesn't have a job?????

well...........

It was suggested to a buddy of mine( by his former HR dept.) who was laid off recently and continually contacts HR asking if anything's opening up to sell his classic movie collections (VHS & Disc). Well, he checked into it with local resellers they're going for about a $1.00 each.
Or you can do what I already tried, sell a few items on Ebay.
WELL!!! Lemme tell ya Ebay ain't what it used to (especially re: assorted fees have really increased!!!) and since Ebay's a reflection of our economy the stuff's going for about a 1/3 of what it's worth!!! No way!!! I'm not down to ramen pride & crackers just yet and I think I'd probably only sell if I go down to crackers only!
One has to declare that money just like income to unemployment (please correct me if I'm wrong-they'd consider it "income", so I'd have to declare it to them so they can deduct that from my previous slave labor history of wages.
So, these two formulas are out for me! (until I hit crackers only of course.)

Income is income...

It's crazy, right? I was denied unemployment benefits because of this website! They said, "Well, it's activity that could make you some money someday, so technically you're not unemployed." Plus, I have to fill out a Schedule C and all this hoo-ha.

It's important to track your expenses. I haven't done the numbers, but I'm guessin' my Schedule C will show a small loss on anemic "sales."

They really should simplify the tax system. If nothing else, it's a terrible waste of everybody's time to do it this way. It's also a huge waste of taxpayer money because of the administration costs.

Whatever -- you live in the world you live in, not the one you want to live in.

When life hands you sh*t, make fertilizer.

Denied w/ no income from this site?????????????

I think NOT!!! First you have to "make a buck for them to deduct!!!" Sure you've created a website that brings in Zero dollar-O's!!! Is this all because of the $2 donation you ask for?? Well, you need to OMIT that from the site or show them a Schedule C w/ a ZERO income on it OR a worthy tally of losses-another reflection of our economy!!! Anything to deny that UI!!! So, if you've made a few lousey bucks you list that as income earned that week and they should deduct that-likely as part time wages-AND THEY HAVE TO COMP THE REST ACCORDING TO THEIR FREAKING SCHEDULES OF BS because they want everyone to pick up part time, anything time, anything earned so they don't have to pay you the full UI that you supposedly qualify for......YOU NEED TO APPEAL!!! IMMEDIATELY!!! GO TO THE APPEALS TRIBUNAL!!!

Too late.

The clock's run out on that claim, and at this point there has been a little -- very little -- income from this site. In New York, that plus the prospect of "future earnings" is enough basis on which to be denied. I'm not going to waste my time on an appeal.

What about starting your own business?

Is anyone exploring possibilities of starting up their own businesses - sorry if there's already something on this site, like a city directory for those trying to push out on their own and in need of start-up support. I didn't see anything, but I'm new here. I mean, I've lurked and laughed a lot, but this is my first comment.

Not to oversimplify, but, in general, what kind of permits or insurance does it take to give people rides, or walk dogs, do boat charters? I'm just starting to look at things like this. Just simple things people need or want, nothing supremely complicated. Freelancing in whatever way makes sense in your own community. Like peace and quiet? Yoga instructor.

Or barter - yoga lessons for veggies from someone's garden, tutor stylist's kids in math for steady supply of haircuts. This kind of thing. I know you still can't get around cash for some things, but if you can trade something with someone else who isn't working, reduces each person's need for cash overall.

Brainstorming down this path aloud with employed people, they look at me like I make no sense, but research tells me I do. I believe people have marketable skills they could market themselves and cut the middleman (employer). The real question: is it true?

I have also found economic development nonprofits, which offer services to teach those who crave the autonomy of self-employment how to get started (and inspiring success stories of successful participants); maybe franchises, for those who have some money left to invest and prefer not to start from scratch...

I know health insurance is a problem - are there trades associations that offer reasonably priced group rates? I'll keep looking.

I won't stop researching between resume submissions, either. I've enjoyed unemployment immensely so far - like, on the magnitude of, "these are truly some of the best days of my life." My stomach rolls to think of again selling my precious time and life energy to yet another dysfunctional workplace, where people who are nuts to begin with will be even more whacked under new cut-back pressures. Ugh.

I printed a great article by Mark Morford many years ago (“Why Do You Work So Hard”) and tacked it to my bulletin board where it would inspire me to quit my job - I finally did. If you feel depressed because you didn't leave your job voluntarily, pretend you did and read this (let me know if link doesn’t work): http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/gate/archive/2005/07/08/not...

I suspect I'll get depressed over being unemployed sometime soon, too. Not yet though.

You are on to something

There is money to be made if you have something that people need. Mom and pop operations will come out of this OK, and they will all need products and services.

The biggest impediment to starting a business is capital. It costs money to set up shop properly, and it costs even more money to get the word out about what you're offering. It costs money -- or at least time -- to produce whatever you're producing and in your own business, collecting your money can be challenging. Nobody wants to pay up front, and if you deliver your end they have little incentive to pay you even after the work is done, especially if they know you don't have the resources to make life hard for them if they don't settle their debt.

Thanks for the link, by the way. Everybody should read it.
