How to Survive Unemployment
Posted Thu, 10/02/2008 - 10:02 by chuck
Survival is a given, when you think about it. Here is what works for me.
Three Easy Steps:
- First things first:
Apply for unemployment benefits and find creative ways to obtain cash.
- Take care of yourself physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Do everything every old person ever told you to do. Eat lots of fruits and veggies, beans, whole grains and not so much salt, sugar, and fat. Exercise daily. Get fresh air and sunshine. "Early to bed and early to rise..." Stay busy. Maintain your social relationships to whatever extent possible. Be kind to your family and to every stranger you meet. Get in touch with God or whatever you want to call the animating force of the universe in whatever way works for you. If you don't believe the universe has an animating force -- that it just is -- then go with that. Anyway, it's a three-pronged deal -- body, mind, spirit. Neglect one and you might as well neglect them all. That's what I've found, anyway.
- Never give up. Life changes. It changed to get you where you are. It will change to take you somewhere else. Do whatever you can to move yourself toward the "somewhere else" of your choosing. When life gives you shit, make fertilizer. Never lose faith. Never stop hustling. Survive.
That's it. Focus. Move forward. Don't pray for a job. Don't pray for money. If you're going to pray, pray that you have the right attitude, that you will be present in each moment and do the best thing in each moment.
Gotta go. Much to do.
Good luck!

good advice
it's a tough stage in any person's life to be unemployed. the main thin they have to remember that it is a temporary phase and being optimistic about the future is a sound advice to have. it will only be their own actions that will help them deal with the harsh unemployment effects.
The Emotional Aspects of Being out of work
Hi Chuck,
What an excellent blog post! Not many people tell unemployed people to take care of themselves emotionally, spiritually and physically. That is vital! In 2002, I wrote a book entitled "How to Survive and Thrive After a Layoff." I think there are two or three copies still on Amazon for 66 cents! Anyway, I recently put together a Special Report with an excerpt from the book on the emotional aspects of being laid off. I thought it was the area most people neglected.

Surviving unemployment is
Surviving unemployment is never easy. People should know that they need to save what little money they can by either not get new stuff and not spend it on foolish things like going out (at least not on a weekly basis), not going to restaurants, buy cheap insurance, move to a smaller apartment and so on. I managed to get a decent deal on insurance by typing car insurance ireland in google and saved a lot of money. My husband is unemployed for over 4 months now and we had to cut costs big time... Unfortunately my mortgage is pretty pricey but we're doing our best. College fees are a pain so does health insurance but we are not giving up.
Surviving Unemployment
Hi lovercathi:
Thanks for sharing with US.
What steps are you taking to deal with your mortgage?
I have been reading about some options for homeowners and wondered if you had researched any of these options.

Couldn't have said it better myself. I like how short, sweet, and simple this post is. If only unemployment was that easy. Keeping your sanity while unemployed is so important and I am glad you made it a point to mention to focus on personal growth. Thanks - Joe
