This is real market research -- it won't make you rich, but it will make you some cash and won't cost you anything but a little time.
First let me be honest here. I'm not unemployed (yet). So everything I say here is basically bollocks to those of you who are facing the sheer terror/panic/depression of having lost meaning for 1/3 of your days. I simply hope that my past expierences with unemployment can help.
I've been fired and laid off from jobs and approached each situation very differently. One theme though that followed me through both stints with unemployment was to treat it as an opportunity (I told you this would sound bad).
Sure you say, "this guy has a job, what does he know"? What I know is that each time I lost a job it was the kick in my ass to look at myself, my strengths, my weaknesses, my desires, my skills and really figure out where I wanted to go. More importantly, taking an honest look at myself told me what I'd need to do to get to where I wanted to be. If I needed classes I took them. If I needed expierence I took crappy jobs that got me that expierence.
The great thing about taking a moment to assess yourself honestly is that it can give you a starting point or a goal when you feel adrift in a sea. There's a very good chance that I, like millions of others who already have, will lose my job in the next 12 months. If it happens though it's simply my opportunity to figure out what's next and how to get there.

You're right
But it's a lot easier to say that when you've got a job.
Anyway, the interesting thing these days is that almost everybody is touched by unemployment. It's as if we, as a civilization, are being forced to "assess ourselves honestly," as you put it.

Hey, Chuck
I saw a couple of your resumes in the resume listings -- sweet! You will have no trouble getting a job after things turn around. That's my professional opinion.
What if things don't turn around...
...until I'm 65? I need a job now.

It does put things into focus
The hard thing for me is dealing with the panic and depression. And poverty isn't all that fun, I'm finding.

Hey i just thought i'd take this time to vent. Thanks for the opportunity and providing a forum for expression.I have a Degree & Experience..But I've been un-employed and broke for 7 months now. You know I've always wondered what I would have done in 1929 during the "Great Depression" but never imagined i would get the chance to actually find out!
Facing the same circumstances in 2009 of the 21st century is a testiment to poor government leadership and a bare handed slap in the face to the hard working loyal law biding American people. The U.S. Government should be "ASHAMED" in these times i decided to pursue my music passion and i took my last check and recorded my Gospel music cd and packaged it for sale. i have been living with my parents and surviving off of walking around every day asking people to support Gods Music and purchase my cd. it's not much but it's a start. God Bless.

Good luck to you
I'm a musician, too. It's a tough way to make a living. Most Julliard-trained musicians don't end up working in their field, at least as performing musicians.

Hmnnn .... I'm a bass player. Used to make a good living from it. What do you play Chuck ? I wonder how many other musos are here.
Guitar
I'm no virtuoso, but I know how to rock out and have fun.
