Jobless Claims Rise Unexpectedly

New unemployment claims rose in the week of June 28, to 472,000. The four-week average is up to 466,500, the highest level since March.

This is interesting: The number of people collecting benefits rose in the week of June 19 to 4.9 million. Some 600,000 people fell off the rolls between June 1 and June 19 due to the stalling of the extension bill.

House Rejects Standalone Extension Bill

Citing concerns about the national debt, the U.S. House of Representatives has rejected the standalone unemployment extension bill introduced by Representatives Levin (D-MI) and McDermott (D-WA).

Democrats introduced the bill under a special procedure that limited debate, disallowed amendments, and would have required a 2/3 majority to pass.

The bill would have prevented 200,000 people from falling off the unemployment rolls each week, extending coverage until the end of November at a cost of $33.9 billion.

Senator Single-handedly Screws 1.2 Million Unemployed

Somebody really needs to take Jim Bunning (R-KY) out the woodshed and whoop his butt for this. Then they need to wash out his mouth with soap.

Bunning was the lone holdout against an emergency extension of unemployment benefits for the 1.2 million people whose benefits will run out in March. Other senators tried to reason with him until nearly midnight. The highlight of the proceeding may have been Bunning's telling Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-OR) "Tough shit" in response to Merkley's impassioned entreaty that he change his mind.

Congressman Decries Unemployment Extension

Rep. Lee Terry
Representative Lee Terry (R-NE) has decried the unemployment extension measure that passed yesterday as symbolic of Speaker Nancy Pelosi's (D-CA) "arrogance."

The complaint was not about the extension of benefits per se but about the limitation of the extension to the 27 states where the official (grossly underestimated) unemployment rate is over 8.5 percent.

Tweeted the congressman:

...That excludes Nebraska. Why is an unemployed person in California more worthy of help than an unemployed person in Nebraska? I voted NO.
