Georgia Expected to Report Near-record Unemployment Rate
WTVM of Columbus, Georgia, reports that the numbers to be announced Thursday in Georgia will show the highest rate of unemployment ever recorded in that state. The only surprise here is that it took so long into this endless recession for Georgia to reach this point.
Why is this news significant? Because the unemployment rate of today is not your father's unemployment rate. You have to understand that the rate is still calculated by phone survey. Back in the old days, before cell phones and mass homelessness, the unemployment rate was higher because a greater percentage of the unemployed had old-fashioned land-line phones and were therefore counted in the statistics.
I don't know how many other states will be reporting "near-record" unemployment, but I do know that the old records, most likely attained during the recessions of the late-1970s and early-1980s, did not reflect as severe a situation as we find ourselves in today.

100% Tax Free Unemployment for 2009
How about giving the unemployed a tax break by taxing the banks so they can pay for it. A new legislative bill called the "JOBLESS STUB 2009 TAX FREE ACT" (STUB meaning Stop Taxing Unemployment Benefits)is being launched. The web site at Unemployment Gone Mad serves a community of
activists and supporters and the bill plan proposal makes all Unemployment Benefits received in 2009 tax free, not just the current IRS $2400 deduction. We are seeking a coalition of partnerships to gather grass root support for Congressional Committee Action. We feel this injustice of paying taxes on unemployment benefits when there are so many long term unemployed, 5.8 million is an issue
worthy of action. http://unemployment-gone-mad.com/ When you consider the 6 digit bonus money for bank executives and mangers, an added tax on banks who used our bail out money for profits and survival is warranted. The fact that the banks who created this financial crisis in the first place can finally help the unemployed is a positive turning point that needs legislative reform. Country

It is a gross injustice to tax unemployment benefits when the very rich have so much more than they need.
