Just want to share

I stumbled across this blog and thought I would join so as to have a sense of community with my fellow unemployed brethren. Having read some of the other posts on here I've noticed that a lot of thoughts, frustrations and feelings I'm going through are commonplace. I've been stuck in unemployment hell for close to a year & half and it's a demoralizing, humbling, and frustrating place to be. One of the hardest things I'm finding is that the days of "hitting the bricks" to find a job is no longer an option. The days of walking into a human resource office are over and even if you do know someone the answer always seems to be the same, "please submit resume via our website" It's like one big black hole, who knows where these resumes go or who's looking at them.

While that's frustrating enough there is now way to "follow up" all replies to applications seems to be auto-generated with a do not reply email addy. There is no humanity to the process anymore. Anyway I could go on & on but I just wanted to share this aspect of my frustration of being unemployed. I look forward to comments pro or con and wish all the best of luck in getting back into the working world.

Go against the grain

You need to talk to real people in the real world. Submitting resumes into the "big black hole" (as you put it) of online resumes is a sucker's game.

Try this experiment: Just start talking to everyone you can. Get some business cards. Get out and talk to people. Find places where you will find people. Get on the phone. Talk to people and listen to them. Have enough conversations, and sooner or later you'll find someone to help -- someone who will pay you for your help.

When life hands you sh*t, make fertilizer.

Submitting your application and resume online

I submitted my resume online for my last job. I held that job for seven years. A detail I would like to share with you is when my resume was reviewed by the hiring manager someone at the company knew me and put in a good word for me. It opened the door. So you need to do both – apply online and network.

It always helps when the door is open

If it's not, get a battering ram.

Online apps aren't enough, though.

This was the second job I got thru online apps

I got my prior job by submitting an online application through Monster.com. Unfortunately that job only lasted one year - then came the recession of 2001 and many got laid off.

Everyone should take advantage of all job leads - online - referrals - networking - working temp to perm – and yes even working temp. When I was a recruiter we would get calls for temps – they wouldn’t tell us they were looking to fill a permanent position and every so often we would get calls because the company wanted to hire the temp permanently! But you are right Chuck - if you have someone cheering for you and in your corner it's a lot easier. I lost count of the amount of job I applied for online (must have been at least a million - only kidding - but it certainly felt that way) but I did get both jobs by applying online as hard as that is… I know it feels like we are throwing a rock into the middle of a deep lake to never see it again but once in a while it works.
