Yesterday I discovered this cool website called Survive Unemployement. I was just beginning to stress over the recent on going news about it, so I decided to surf the internet to see if I could find others like me online. I have been unemployed since Jan 2009. I worked as a travel agent for a large corporation for 6 1/2 years, I too had medical insurance, 401K, and a productive life. Our whole department was outsourced and we were told we were being laid off 6 mos prior to the dreadful day. Since there were no jobs in my field, (a 1 1/2 later no one in my office has found work) or any other, I decided to go back to college and totally reinvent myself. 6 mos before starting school I had nothing to do, so I understand the depression part of this process, losing my job, and my benefits haunted me everyday. I felt like what the hell did I do? I went to work everyday, I went to work sick, (sickness was frowned upon) I was a loyal employee. However that did not make a difference when it came to outsourcing a whole dept. It is not our fault that we are in this situation, yeah there are lots of people to blame, but like all negative things we have to get pass it, and I say bullshit to that.

These UC checks have been helpful and I figure since I have been working for over 30 years and paid every single tax imposed, and laid off through no fault of my own, no jobs, and politicians that don't give a crap, I am in school to do something productive and because I will be working till the day I die. A grimm throught, however realistic one. Besides we unemployed contribute to the economy, we pay bills, buy stuff, and take out student loans. I thought this is what taxes cover?

I just want to thank you for creating this blog, and all who are members, maybe one day this will turn into a blog called Survived umemployment, because we all have jobs. :)

Welcome, Jane!

I hope it does turn into "Survived Unemployment."

Good for you, going back to school. I hope you find something better than what you left behind.

One theme I find over and over again when people e-mail me or comment on the site is anger. We have every right to be angry. We worked hard and had our lives pulled out from under us so that our greedy bosses could make more money. They were making money already in most cases. It's downright cruel, and you're right about politicians apparently not giving a shit. They serve their masters, the same greedy bosses that ruined our lives.

I hope that after this new Great Depression is over, posts like yours serve as shameful reminders of the way this society used to be. We need to get together and build something new. It sounds like you've got a good start on yourself. Education is always a good investment.

Good luck to you.

"Survived Unemployment"

Thank you Chuck, for the welcome, wish it was under better circumstances. I will continue to tune in to this site, I have spread the word to my fellow ex co-workers who feel the same. It is really good to connect with others who are just as pissed. Good luck to all of us!

I'm glad you've found it helpful

There are so many of us. I'm sure if we put our heads, hearts, and efforts together, we could make some progress.

Thanks for being a pioneer. See you around!
