Are people getting jobs?

It seems like the unemployment forums I've visited have been quieter lately. I'm wondering if more people are getting jobs these days... I'm still having trouble.

Everyone's just tired of the topic

It's an issue that will be around for a long time. No rush to discuss it right now.

But in answer to your question: Some are definitely getting jobs. New jobless claims hit a 2.5-year low this week. That's great news!

Keep trying, Jen! Something will pan out for you. There is no tree that doesn't fall after 1,000 chops.

Thanks

Thanks for the reply and encouragement. I am still trying though it is frustrating. I've been wondering about that statistic - it seems to indicate that fewer people are getting laid off, and that's good, but it doesn't mean much in terms of the unemployed being rehired, or new job creation. Maybe this is a plateau.

I like your analogy although it feels more like I am giving one chop to a thousand trees. But who knows, maybe one will fall over some day. Glad you were able to find something good.

Well, there you go!

That sounds about right. Your energy is dispersed, and it needs to be focussed to accomplish anything.

Pick a tree and keep chopping at it.

I'm still here

Hi!

I am long time unemployed, went back to school for a second masters (this one in health care administration) and am having NO LUCK finding a job STILL!

I thought since my work experience was in health care, but my other degrees were in liberal arts, that was the problem with getting work.

Well, I am half done with this degree, I carry a 4.0/4.0 and still no interviews. I am over 45, have been out of work more than 18 months and I feel as though I have become a statistic. The group that is finding it extremely difficult to find work.

I no longer collect unemployment, I am not on any government assistance, no one has called me to ask me my 'situation', I have NOT STOPPED looking for work-----is anyone counting me in the unemployment figures----I don't think so!!!!

I have not been around here in awhile because I just am tired of being in this position.

Don't worry jenh.... you are not the only one still on unemployment forums...unfortunately. :-(

same position as you

Hi cag,

Strangely enough, I was just filling out a graduate school application yesterday for a second master's! I was thinking the same thing too - the field I'd been working in was different from my educational background. And I'm going to be 45 in a few months... I guess employers are trying to cut costs as much as possible these days so that's why they are hiring younger. Well, maybe the inexperienced will screw things up so badly that they'll have to hire some of us old folks to come in and fix things... ;-) (BTW, I'm not counted either)

no hope in sight

I am 50, been unemployed for a year and have had 1 phone interview. I have 21 years in banking. Never thought I would be in this position.

Not much, but something

Yesterday I got a call from the dept head at the local community college I taught at last semester. She wanted to know if I was interested in a course for the fall. This isn't my dream job by any stretch, but I think it will help keep me in the game, it's a fallback if nothing else comes through, and will at least get me earning something. Also I can put it on my resume. I felt pretty good about this, because I thought I'd done a really horrible job last semester and they'd never want me back. So, confidence is up a little bit... and I think that's what I need right now. BTW, just in general, teaching at the local community college may be a good option for some right now - their enrollments are way up.

Great news!

Confidence is the key to everything, and you could do a lot worse than teaching a course at a community college, molding young minds.

Congratulations!

Thanks again

Chuck, I appreciate the fact that you still check back here and offer support and encouragement. If nothing else, this rough road has taught me the value of compassion, and I hope that once I get back on my feet I'll also be able to help others in some way...
