Hi everyone. I am in Illinois and over 40 yrs old. I am coming up on the 2 year anniversary of being laid off. It has been rough going.
I have a BS and a Master's degree. I had been working for a organization for 6 years when I moved into another department for a chance at better pay and advancement.
After hiring me to create training and presentations and lead an IT project, the organization changed my job duties several times. A person in management then decided that my skills were not necessary.I was laid off after a year.
In the meanwhile, I have become the caretaker for an elderly parent. Because of this I am unable to move to another town.My siblings will not assist me in care and have left all responsibilities to me.
I have applied to so many jobs - my file is so thick. The few interviews that I have had have been uneventful. I fight off depression and crying fits. I am hoping that 2012 brings better luck. I am trying to decide if I should start a small business using my skill set.
It is great having a place where I can vent and read other stories. Thank you!
Go for it! 2012 will "bring" better luck for you if you ask politely (but assertively).
Thanks for sharing your story. It sounds like you do have fungible skills. Figure out who needs your help, then go out and help them!
Best of luck!
