This is real market research -- it won't make you rich, but it will make you some cash and won't cost you anything but a little time.
Since my last job materialized through a recruiter and since I enjoyed that job so much, I've decided to put the business on the back burner and see if a recruiter can place me again.
The thing is, most recruiters are shady. The one who placed me before is pretty good so I'm sticking with them.
So far, so good. I've had three interviews:
One was for a job that seemed boring. I did my best in the interview but my lack of interest must have showed because they passed.
The second was for a job that seemed interesting. I talked to four team members. It went well. The recruiter said they wanted to make me an offer. Great! That was last Monday and I've heard nothing further so I assume it fell through.
The third was for a contract-to-hire job that was very interesting. I thought I had done very well in the interview but have heard nothing back (it's been five days) so I assume they don't want me.
Out of frustration, I posted my resume on Dice.com again. It's been viewed 18 times, and I've had at least 10 calls. Good, right? Not really.
(As if on cue, my phone rings...
and...
30 minutes later I'm back.)
Some of these recruiters seem to be playing some kind of crank call game where they are just trying to waste as much of my time as possible. Of course I know that's not the case, but it seems like it sometimes.
Going to take my resume down now. My advice: If a recruiter finds you and you feel comfortable with them, stick with them and don't bother with others.

You gotta be shitting me!
So I get a call from a recruiter that floated my resume to a potential client who decided to pass because the word "shit" appeared prominently in one of my websites.
Laugh. Out! Loud!
Yeah, like I would want to work for someone who can't handle the word "shit." I suppose I could change it to "poopie" or "doo-doo" but then I might get hired by some thin-skinned jerk.

Besides using recruiters, what other ways do you job search?

Ha ha. Really makes you
Ha ha. Really makes you wonder what kind of people are in charge these days doesn't it?
I just got an email from a job I applied for back in January saying that they aren't going to fill it at this time. A few weeks ago they called all my references, did a background check, and even told me that I was the recommended candidate.
This angers me so much, and it's not the first time it's happened. I mean really, don't bug my references unless you really, really want to hire me. I don't want to use up their good favors.
Similar thing happened to me...
... got a verbal offer last week and was told they'd run it through HR and get me the paperwork in a couple of days.
HR (more likely Finance) decided that they didn't need to fill the role at this time but that I was the guy when they do. I'm sorta thinking I dodged a bullet there...

Sorry
Hey Jen:
So sorry to hear what happened. Unfortunately this kind of thing is becoming the norm. It has happened to me and several of my friends on more than one occasion in the past year. I feel just like you where my references are concerned. I wonder what they must be thinking when they keep getting all these calls about me. I just have faith that my references are solid and they understand the situation.
Hang in there!
Thanks Dee. I'm not as bad
Thanks Dee. I'm not as bad off as some. I feel a little guilty posting here actually, because I am employed now - although seriously underemployed, with a boss who wants to keep me down. I found this site sometime last year during a horribly rough year of unemployment. I think it was one of the things that kept me going. Anyway, good luck to you too.
Guilty?!?
Don't feel guilty! You're an inspiration.
As for that boss of yours, I hope you win them over... or win over them. :-D

No need to feel guilty
Hi Jen:
Underemployment is just as bad as unemployment. The underemployed struggle to meet their basic needs day after day and forbid any emergencies come up.
Underemployment is something that quite a few of the unemployed are going to face as they start to find jobs again. It is a trend and some companies are not shy about hiding it. During an interview with a well-known, national company, I was told that they were going to be doing a massive amount of hiring during this time. The reason being is that they could gobble up so many talented, experienced people and get them at a discount. They are able to do it too because people are desperate for any steady income that keeps them bobbing at the water line.
Please do keep coming back and sharing with us. You have a valuable story and experience to share with everyone.
How did you get your job?

How did you get your job?

Thanks everyone. Chuck, I've
Thanks everyone. Chuck, I've been called a lot of things, but an inspiration is not one of them... thank you. :)
I found the job by going through the listings on the institution's employment site. There were a few things in my favor I think - 1) that this job was local, 2) that I had worked a temp job there a few months before, and 3) that I knew someone who had worked with the hiring manager, and this person put in a good word for me. So yeah, connections - important! I've had some kind of connection in 5 of the 6 jobs I've ever gotten.
Hey Jen, Trust me you dodged
Hey Jen,
Trust me you dodged a bullet. The last three positions I have had were filled by recruiters. They were also not financially viable to any of the companies. Simply put-last ditch attempts to squeeze money (blood) out of turnips. Funny thing is this was never revealed during extensive interviewing.
If you think about it recruiters make money when they 'sell' a job. I've seen companies with such lean HR staffs that recruiters are brough in to help 'consult' the company on their org chart needs. Additionally, many companies with significant HR and or legal issues will bring in a third party (recruiter) to fill untenable/shitty positions.
Bottom line: Be hyper-careful when working with recruiters and assume the position is 'contract' until you see for your self the reality of the job.
Best of luck!
The Internet is a wonderful thing!
Imagine if these were the days of the Great Depression when there was no Internet. People then only had their immediate family or friends to rely on for support and advice. Communities were small and isolation was the norm. Now we have this wonderful invention of the Internet that makes our community global. We can instantly reach and find hundreds, thousands, even millions of people that we share commonalities with. Look at the people that come to this site. They are in pain, are scared, and looking for a place to find resources, to vent, or just to share their stories.
However, in this new world, everything you say and do will be used against you. It doesn't matter what a persons intention is behind what they publicly post, it is more about how other people may interpret your postings and how they are going to use those interpretations. What this does is make some of us afraid to have an opinion lest it be unpopular or fear making any kind of mistake that might be held against us forever. Sometimes it feels like we are no longer allowed to be human with normal human behaviors. Instead, we have to make ourselves into a "brand" and shamelessly promote our brand to get as many people to like us as possible.
It's a shame that this was used against you instead of focusing on the good things you have created, Chuck. Just keep staying human. At least some of us like you that way!
