Last week new unemployment claims rose to 500,000, the highest level in nine months, according to the Labor Department.
The drop is attributable to three factors, in order of importance:
President Obama responded to the report by pushing a bill to provide tax incentives for small businesses to hire workers. Pardon the editorial, but this is a half-measure, just the kind of weak, half-stepping, equivocating, butt-kissing-the-greedy-rich crap I've come to expect from this incredibly disappointing president. It is not sufficient and sort of a slap in the face. Tax incentives are not going to cause any business to hire in this economic climate. It shows how out-of-touch these career politicians are with the real world. If you run a business and you're barely surviving, are you going to hire new workers just to get a little tax break? Common sense, guys and gals, that's all we're asking from Washington. It seems to be in short supply there.
What this president should be talking about is a massive infrastructure bill. This is the sort of bold step that can build a legacy and secure his place in history for something other than being the first African-American president. The great presidents were the ones who took risks, who had the guts to be ambitious and propose radical ideas: Thomas Jefferson with the Louisiana Purchase, Teddy Roosevelt with the national parks, FDR with the New Deal, JFK with the moon project -- all of these were considered radical in their times. In times like these, we need a radical president who is willing to stand up to his pay masters and do the right thing by the people.
I mean, tax cuts? Really? Are you sh!tting me? That's the solution to unemployment? If anything we should be RAISING taxes on businesses that OUTSOURCE American jobs. Crikey.
A massive infrastructure bill would kill two birds with one stone: Create jobs and shore up the embarrassingly decrepit infrastructure in the U.S. Seriously, it's embarrassing. Brazil isn't supposed to have nicer trains and roads than we do here in the "richest country in the world." It's just not right (not that I begrudge the Brazilians their fine roads).
And while we're at it, maybe we could find some money for states and cities so that all those good jobs aren't lost and services aren't cut. I mean Jiminiy H. Cricket on a crutch, did anyone ever believe that we could get to a situation where some municipalities are having trouble keeping their 911 emergency lines open? What happens next, outright anarchy?
Wall Street reacted to the news with triple-digit drop. Oh-- wait... this just in: Who the hell cares? We have other things to worry about these days. Stop trying to party like it's 1998, mainstream media. Stop half-stepping, Mr. President. Be the great president we need, the one we elected you to be!

Unemployment Claims 500k and rising
Unemployment is on the rise unfortunately and it seems like everyone has the answer, but who is actually standing behind their words? It's a tough job to come into this economy as the president and try to turn it around over the span of 4-8 years. We are definitely going to need more than a tax cut bill for small businesses. Even if the president isn't able to turn the economy around for the best, who can blame him?
It's ironic that now we vote an African American into the office when the economy is at it's worst. That's not really fair at all. If we Americans are going to ever see a real change in our economy we are going to have to get back to the basics of what our economy is built upon, and that's good ol' capitalism. Unemployment is just a part of the economy and people are going to have to learn how to be independent of such negative factors. We are going to have to learn how to be self employed and start playing the game the way the wall street guys play. Or end up in this never ending cycle of unemployed to employed, back to unemployed. It's a broken record.

agreed
I never understood how tax cuts would do anything to create jobs. If a small business owners gets a tax break, but doesn't have enough work coming into his/her shop, why would he/she hire more people? I agree that increasing taxes on outsourced work makes a LOT more sense...bring these jobs back home, for god's sake. Put us back to work.
IMHO
The president should have focused more energy on our economy - instead of national healthcare. He wanted to be known as the president that brought national healthcare to America. That was his goal. Well all of us are going to need it because without a job we don't have any other option... I have seen many presidents - but none who pointed backwards to past administrations for as long as this president. He knew what he was getting into when he ran for president so stop the blame game, and feeling sorry for himself. Every president in my lifetime, and most of you know how old I am from my posts here, have picked up the slack for things that went astray with past administrations but I have never in my lifetime seen a president that was such a cry baby. He continues to point backwards and it makes him look weak. I am surprised he doesn't have a stiff neck by now. He ran for the job, and he knew what he was getting into. He took the job and now he needs to take responsibility - Clinton left a big mess - I didn't hear GWB complaining about it the entire time he held office. There were many presidents that left messes… Obama is a charismatic speaker - but you know, actions speak louder than words. I can hardly hear his actions…
IMHO
Freckles,
I respectfully disagree...people are blaming President Obama for every and any thing wrong in this country.
There was no Tea Baggers, no Representatives shouting out "You lie!!!" at the President... at the President of the United States while he was speaking. The disrespect displayed toward this man is rampant. The frothings of some people and groups are like a tsnuami of hate. I have never seen and heard people say things like they have about any other president, it makes me embarrassed.
I don't think it makes him look like a crybaby, hell I'd be reminding people turn around is going to take time after the last 8 years and that the problems facing the country were pre-existing if I were being vilified on a daily basis like he is too.
-- and GWB -- I'm not even going there. I don't recall him ever taking accountability for any of the crises he threw this country. But I do remember him blaming others, and if you disagreed with anything Bush said or did after 9/11 you were called unpatriotic and ridiculed. The Dixie Chicks lost their careers over it.
And I rarely go here -- but -- are you all aware there are members of the House, Senate, and Congress that block anything the man wants to do because they want him to fail for only one reason.
No matter what issue he focuses on, there is complaining because he is not addressing "this" or "that." Like I said, no matter what the man does he is vilified.
Personally, I think he should be more gangster like Cheney, he did what he wanted and didn't give a blip what any of us said or thought.
...I'm just sayin'
Thankful for another day.
BTW
Chuck,
Thank you for having your say (it's true he does need to something radical like the other presidents you mentioned) and solutions -- and not attacking the President personally. I wish more bloggers were capable of this.
....argh, Freckles I meant I disagreed with what you said about the president in general -- not that he shouldn't focus on the economy.
Thankful for another day.
I like President Obama...
... and I feel like his heart is in the right place, but so far he is incredibly disappointing. He looks like a deer in headlights all the time. He hasn't had the spine to take a stand on anything, and leadership is not about equivocation and fence sitting -- it's about saying, "Hey, everybody, here's exactly where I stand. Now who's with me!"
I agree with you that the hatred and vitriol are really gross. It's also sad that people do not see how badly the previous administration messed up. I feel sorry for President O for having to clean up this ridiculous mess.

President Obama
Chuck
I like President Obama also, Come on lets be honest did he over-lend to people who could not afford homes, Did he allow company's to ship jobs over seas .. This man was given Lemon's to work with but has yet to find someone to help squeeze them so now all is plated on his shoulders to carry.I see the American people telling him to fix 20 years of mistakes, Stop the war,fix the job market, feed the poor, lower tax,s, help all worlds catastrophes . I'm sure he feels like Helen Keller while trying to juggle razor blades. Yes he is the President of the greatest nation in the world but lets not forget he is only one man.
That's true
I do understand that he was given a tough row to hoe, but he signed up for the job. So often he looks like a deer in the headlights, especially on economic issues. He talks a good game but hasn't taken a strong stand on anything yet. It's sort of disappointing.
