Welcome to my unemployment story
Welcome to my little site about surviving unemployment. Feel free to join, especially if you're unemployed. It's free. I'm hoping to build a community of support and empowerment. It would be nice to be able to organize, wouldn't it? Strength in numbers and all that.

My Unemployment Story by Elizabeth
In the fall of 2008 my contract position ended. The agency I worked for could not reassign me because there was no work. I was unemployed for about 9 months when I got a seasonal job at a boating supply store. In August I was offered another contract position that was supposed to be for a year. The day I came out on the service floor they had brought in two guys from the Phillipines to start training for our jobs. We were told that our jbs would be gone by the end of December. I confronted management about this. They didn't care. I said I had signed on for a year and that had I known my job was going to be outsourced in two months, I would have never accepted the position. The way it would have worked for me would have been that my boat supply job would end at the end of summer and could continue with my UE beneftis and keep looking for other work. As it was, I had accepted this "full-time" contract and was stuck with it. Conditions on the job just kept getting worse by the day. They brought in a phone system we were supposed to log in and out of to track our time. They became extrememly punitive about missing any of our breaks or lunches. We would get points for missing log-ins and there would be punishment for this. I am used to this type of time tracking system from having worked in many call centers. This is the way agent statistics are tracked. It makes sense in a call center to have this type of system but this was a customer support center that wasn't a call center. We communicated through e-mails with customers and as long as we resopnded to them within a 24 hour window, we were meeting out service level agreement. Also, since most the work got farmed out overseas, we were actually fighting over what few e-mails came in during the day. I would be lucky to actually work 5 e-mails in the course of my 8 hour day, about an hour's worth of work. The rest of the day we just sat there. Really. We were strictly forbidden from surfing the net or watching movies or anything like that just to fill in the time. They should have just laid us off. Basically it didn't matter what our schedules were like because we had no high traffic times of the day. When I first started the job, we could pick just about schedule we wanted and this worked very well for everyone. Then they cracked down and put most people into schedules that made their lives impossible. I went from an hour a day commute to a three hours a day commute. Also, they kept promsing us new work but then kept switching us all around on these odd projects. It was chaos and psychologically very distressing. The problem is that I think they had overhired and now could not lay us off without incurring huge unemployment benefits costs. They made us miserable to make us quit. I finally quit, couldn't hack it anymore. I have filed for unemployment and will make it clear to the state UE agency that this company intentionally forced me to quit by making the working conditions so terrible.
There IS a solution!
Hi. I discovered your website. Pretty good you know. I am unemployed myself. Recently laid off due to company restructuration...
Allow me Chuck to post a comment on your site if this is ok with you.
So, there IS a solution ... as Americans it is difficult to conceptualize it (not a capitalistic idea plus a mutually beneficial concept instead of win lose situation) but it can be done ... Here it is... It did hapen in Argentina.... and other place in smaller scale.
A Parallel Economy!
There are many solid reasons for such an Economy. This P- economy based on a community ... Increasingly self-reliant community ... The sum of the parts ... aiming at closing the gaps that exist ... handled like a business and organized like the Army but with a much flatter hierarchy. Self-sustained and funded by members. YOU, US, all.
The goal would not be so much to encourage each other but instead offer a system with alternative opportunities for and from those belonging and /or supporting this parallel economy.
An extreme example with the energy sector ... how much costs a wind farm? 20 millions dollars to be of interest to a county or US city. What is 20 million. $20 million = 20 times 1,000,000. Find 1,000,000 community members that each give $20. What do you get: a wind farm owned by the community. What a wind farm offers: Jobs. What else (remember we paid cash for it)? Well, immediate return on the 20 millions invested that were NOT borrowed. It means within a year 15% return on 20 millions to be divided among the 1,000,000 million of us that invested into it. And remember, we did create jobs and we do own the place as a community. What else: well we have now borrowing capability: we can borrow against the expected return of the wind farm for the next 20 years.
Wind farm is an example.
Let us go further. We are 1 million people owning a wind farm. Hey, let us train people: let us sell courses on Wind Energy. The wind farm now is a degree farm. And so on! Let us build an Eco village around our wind farm. Let us put some solar panel to have free energy. And by the way, let us also train our wind student on solar as well ... We are now creating business synergies. Agfain who owns it: us the 1 million of us for 20 dollars each. We do have a competitive advantage: we are low cost labor: white and blue collars ... unemployed ... we provide part time support to this project at no cost while still looking for jobs!
This is a self-reliant parallel economy that I suggest , could be launched ... by all of us as a team, we have both the capital and the expertise, both at ridiculous cost : 20 dollars each and leveraging a few hours of our own time ... Plus it is a protection toward the uncertainty of the future ...
These are only a few of the ideas that can be implemented as well as a few of the existing resources ... and that is pure RISK SHARED ...
We could call this place (wind farm) Technopolis ... or Technoville
What do you guys think of it. What about you chuck. You can send me an Email at luc.f@live.com
Thank you Chuck for allowing me a bit of space on your great site ... to bring my input for the benefits of us all ...
Someone who gets it!
I wish I could type well enough to do your comment justice.
What you are talking about is dead-on. We can take our ball and go home. We don't need The Man. The Man needs us. All we need to do is organize.
Thank you so much for your comment with its important ideas. I PROMISE to write about this at length after I get my other hand back.

Surviving Unemployment
My husband has been unemployed for 6 months now after being laid off from a successful job in the financial sector. It's been tough but the key is to stay positive! There are ways to survive unemployment and I remind myself the only way we'll get through it is if we stick together and support eachother just as we always have. Check out this article too:

Yes indeed.
"stick together and support each other" is the key to everything.
Good luck and thanks for your comment.
When life hands you sh*t, make fertilizer.
Let us go for empowerment
I think we are running on the same wave, although we are living in two different continents.
Unemployment is a global problem and therefor needs global action.
It is encouraging to see more and more jobless initiatives arising.
All of us have little or no resources, so I am in for cooperation and exchange.
We, Ed and I, have just launched our jobless community site after 4 months of working out what we had in mind.
Please take a look at http://www.jobless4jobless.org and give me a note ( giedo@jl4jl.org)

learning new ideas for employment
I am with you
when i lost my job in February i realized I could cry for a while or just start working on new ideas. i started working on new ideas. It is scary but It is up to me create a living.
i with learning new tricks, since being laid off in February 09 i have been trying to build up my own skills by creating a new source of income through my own gifts and natural talents. As a former engineer for 7 years, i started researching all types of books and magazines for ideas and after I did that I created a list of potential ideas for everyone that i put in my book. Corporate America is no longer reliable and it is now time to create your own America through you so I wrote a book to help people like i needed help to fight through this economy. You might not be passionate about any one thing but i guarantee there is something you can start or do that create additional income. Step outside of your comfort zone and create some new dots. the dots that america and your teachers and probably your family has painted for you are not working out. if there are no jobs out then you have to create a job. Sell T-shirts if you have to but be the best T-shirt seller. Start landscaping if you have to but be the best landscaper. start a internet business if you have to, come up with an idea for you and make it work for you. My book is titled Prepare For Your Success and I guarantee if you read you find encouragement in this economy and some good business ideas for your self. Do what you have to and don’t give up. You may have a family to take care of or you may have kids. keep trying and check the book of ideas and encouragement out at http://www.PrepareForYourSuccess.com
Kind of ironic...
... you're in the business of helping other people write their resumes but can't find a job yourself.
I can totally relate. Good luck with it.

Optimistic
It happened to me a few years ago and my way of coping is just being positive that there's much better work that's waiting for me. It's the mind that perceive because the body will achieve.
-John@College and Career Planning
I'm so sorry about it. I know
I'm so sorry about it. I know eventually you will find a work for you. Just keep on looking for it and don't lose hope. Goodluck!
Stay positive, there are lots of us out there
Hi, I lost my job a couple of months ago in a restructuring in you guessed it, the financial services industry. And I admit it really sucks. It seems as if the whole world just keeps on revolving without you. Though i knew it could come at any point in time and i had mentally prepared for it (savings, ideas), nobody can prepare you for the social isolation when you're out of work, I find. But, like you Chuck, I try to stress the positive. I now realize there is so much happening out there, fellow brothers and sisters who are in the same situation. I'm sure if we just hang on, everything will fall into place. TC
Yup, that's it.
If you can survive it, you will eventually thrive.
At first that feeling of the world continuing to go on without you is kind of weird. Over time, you learn to carve out a new place for yourself in that spinning world.
Good luck. Hope to see you around. Feel free to blog here if you want to get stuff off your chest.
When life hands you sh*t, make fertilizer.
What kind of hustle?
I've been laid off four times since 2006. Yup, laid off four times, not fired. That's the peril of being attracted to the excitement of startups.
I'm still working as a contractor with my most recent employer, and we're still cultivating opportunities together even though they couldn't keep me on payroll.
Want to give you a salute for staying positive and encouraging others. Although it's stressful, I feel grateful for the last few layoffs. Each one gives me more resolve to learn my hustle. I am finally getting that when this stuff keeps happening, it's life daring you to become who you're supposed to be. I'm getting the message: I'm a freelance writer and creative impresario. The learning curve is stressful (I've gotten by the last few months on unemployment and some small loans from family as I get up to speed), but I'm starting to crave the rush of charting my own course and living an unusual life, instead of feeling the dread that I won't match up to some position's exacting skill set. It finally dawned on me: I don't want to work at a hotshot ad agency or media company. It doesn't matter to me.
In either case, cheers on the site, and best of luck to you and everybody on here.
Stay on your grind, people!
- Nate
Nice to see you around, Nate
Come back any time. Don't you have a login? You should use it.
What I'm finding is that if you just keep doin' your thing -- you know, the thing that makes time irrelevant when you do it -- you'll find a way to make it pay. Never even try to do anybody else's thing. That was the mistake I made for 20 years. No more. This life is way too short to waste doing something you hate, kissing ass, and being scared. You have to do what you love, kick ass, and be brave.

i feel ya
i feel ya man i am unemployed and it sucks. I just got a free phone from safelink wireless though, its a nice compensation prize though @ safelink.com for being unemployed.
That's fantastic information!

unemployed teachers
Hey Chuck, thanks for starting this space. Ive been looking for a spot to support and be supported by unemployed folks. I was an elementary teacher in a really dangerous area in 2007-2008. It frightened me so I resigned. Had I known this recession would hit, I would have kept it. I have literally applied to 20 school districts and no interviews yet, been subbing and tutoring, but COBRA is mighty expensive. Tell me yall, what do you do with your days other than look for work? Thanks again for this site
Hi Lynda, I spend my in shame
Well, I fanially gave in and realized that I cannot do this on my own like I thought. This is my third unemploymnent stage in the last five years. I guess I figured It was so tough the last two times, that I could figure it out and tough it out once again on my own. Wow! NOT. I spend day and night searching and appling online and my nights, and posting stuff I own for sale on craigslist and only break to visit office buildings in hopes of finding work. I feel so ashamed, so weak and powerless.and most of all, alone. But I refuse to give up. This is my first time trying to reach out to others like me. Most days I feel like less than a man because I just ended a 4 year relationship, survived cancer, but lost my living arrangements and ended up at my ex-wife's home..my ex-home and my 4 kids I have with her...I have to deal with her nagging, and constant reminders about how she pays for everything. Tommorrow I will need to suck up some more pride and ask her for gas money in case I get called for an interview.
That is how my days are spent. Thanks for listening to me. Let's organize and raise funds to create an organization....I can make it happen with help! Thanks Chuck!
Man, I know how you feel
I don't have it half as bad as you, but I understand what you mean. The part about the nagging wife rang true to me. I got rid of mine (actually, she left me). You don't need that kind of energy dragging you down.
Have you tried visiting your local unemployment office? They do more than just dole out checks -- training, coaching, business development.
It would be great to form some kind of organization to help the unemployed, but I'm stumped. At the very least I think we should unite around our common issue -- unemployment -- and use it for political leverage. Creating jobs should be the number one job right now, not "economic stimulus" where all the money flows to bureaucrats and their friends the government contractors.
What I'd really like to do is get a business idea I have off the ground and create some jobs. Good luck getting money, though.

SURVIVAL
My husband was a managing editor, he had open heart surgery and has been unemployed since october. We moved to California so I could get employment as Florida nurse jobs are slim in summer. Love it here. Trying to get 2nd job. All I can say is I go to the beach to survive the insanity of it all. 2 months left to his unemployment. After 45 minutes on an online application to KOHLS it says he isn't qualified. YEAK OK! Remember when you went out to apply for jobs at least the employer looked at you. Today at the beach I fell down and got right up again. Thats how I survive. I get up again. Now a son unemployed and second son working part time. Ready for a miracle. 750 people showed up for 23 jobs with a local telecommunication company. After 4 interviews my husband still did not get the job. They filled it internally. The good news is if you get in they look out for you.Good to know.
GOOD LUCK TO ALL
AL
Good luck to you, too.
I'm glad you like California. Seems like jumping out of the frying pan and into the fire, though. I hear it's pretty messed up out there.
"They filled it internally. The good news is if you get in they look out for you. Good to know."
LOL. I love a little dark humor. Yeah, "getting in" these days is like trying to storm a medieval castle. Once you get over the alligator-filled moat of HR, the hiring manager dumps hot oil on you as you try to scale the wall.
When life hands you sh*t, make fertilizer.
That's a great question.
"What do you do with your days other than look for work?"
Funny thing about being unemployed is that I am a lot busier than I was when I had a job, always scrambling for money, never getting enough. It's crazy.
To me, spending a lot of time looking for jobs just didn't make sense after about a month. I decided to start a business. Constantly tweaking the model improves it gradually, and I'm pretty sure that eventually I'll get it to work. Sure is stressful right now, though! I keep telling myself that if I can survive this, I'll be in great shape when things turn around.
Good luck to you. You know it's bad out there when wise people like teachers can't find steady work.
When life hands you sh*t, make fertilizer.
Thats a great question
Hey thanks Chuck for replying to me. Yes it is very stressful to apply over and over to teaching jobs and not get any interviews. Im worn out. I am glad that you started your own business, what kind is it? I am sure that after some time you will get it off the ground and it will be just fine. We need to keep the faith. Oh and I take long walks in the park too!
Apply for anything
Hi Linda Isn't the benefit of a public school teacher is you have the summers off and you can work another job now? I feel for your situation and disappointment, but I am getting interviews and calls for IT job, but I have not gotten any offers yet in 2 months. I guess you have to apply for anything now as what is more stressful is not getting any income and being late on the monthly bills with bill collectors calling me. I envy a guy here in MD getting unemployemnt checks, but like you he has not gotten any interviews or calls. Money is so tight, but I thank God I am healthy and able bodied to work and actively looking for any work.
Inteview Questionsl
Chuck Did you have any recent interviews phone or face to face? I have been on too many which might be deemed good, but it also means I had no offers yet and in the end I was not wanted. Employers are too pick nowadays. I don't know anyone who can fit their rigid job description and experience. Here are some general questions I had to answer on a phone interview for a tech position.
1. What kind of supervisor do you work best for? Provide examples
2. Tell me about the most difficult customer service experience that you have ever had to handle – perhaps an angry or irate customer? Be specific and describe the outcome.
3. Describes a time you disagreed with a co-worker or supervisor about how something should be done. What did you say? What was the result?
4. Tell me about a time you had to make a difficult decision without much time to consider all the options. What factors did you consider when making the decision?
5. Describe a situation in which you identified a person’s strengths, development needs, or goals and then used these attributes to draw the best out of that person?
6. Describe a task you had to complete where you had to involve people for other departments or companies in order to achieve your goal. How did you involve others? What was the result?
7. Give me an example of a time you shared an idea or way of doing things that helped someone else get better results
I know how to give...
... stop-'em-dead-in-their-tracks answers to all those questions and more. I'll devote a post to it in the coming days.
As a techie, you'll appreciate that there is a logical formula for it. Stay tuned.
Thanks for the idea.

Unemloyed Peer
Hi, I lost my job of 5 years at a newspaper on May 12th. I had just survived a major layoff back in November and was so proud of myself. Everyone had to be re interviewed for their job and I passed with flying colors. I was good at my job and brought in alot of revenue. Then a green b*tch supervisor came on board and targeted me with harrassment. Before I could fully report it to HR she fired me. It took a month as she gave me a verbal warning and 3 written warnings. I challenged and defended myself with everything she threw at me. They had no response. I realized then that it wasn't me..she just had an agenda. I remember saying "you can't throw me out into the middle of this recession..I have a 13 yr old to support! The supervisor and HR rep just stared down at their papers. Life can be soo unfair! I was unemployed back in 2004 for 5 month but it was different. Unemployment rate was like 3% and there were more jobs. I'd apply and get a call with most of them for an interview. Its not like that this time around:(
It's always harsh
There's never a good way to become unemployed. It sucks that you got canned by someone with less seniority (if more rank) than you. I've been outplayed in office politics before. It makes you angry as hell.
Good luck to you.
When life hands you sh*t, make fertilizer.
Look Different Chuck
Chuck I am glad you are postive on your youtube video. You never know if a potential employer might contact you. I do share your frustrations in finding a good job. Bills are piling up and the collectors are calling me. I do get interviews like the one I had today, but I have to wait as the employer is also interviewing other candidates. Two months a counting as I need a job/salary/income/money like yesterday. I have to get something by the end of next month August. I hope you get something good too Chuck so you wont have to blog too much here. Later man!
Thanks
Comments like yours are just one of the reasons I love blogging here. If I could figure out a way to squeeze some money out of it, I'd be happy to do it for a living.
Letting potential employers contact me is my new MO. In fact, the ONLY employer I'm interested in talking to is the one who reaches out to me. Why should I chase them down? An employer willing to pay a premium for quality and who actively seeks the same is the only employer that interests me.

How to become employed.
Hello, my name is Ryan.
http://www.Jolapa.com
Just over 2 years ago I decided to conduct a job search with the intent of changing jobs. My efforts included the preparation of a well thought out and professionally written resume, and a door opening cover letter which was customized to each employer.
What I soon realized in today's technology driven society, I could paint a better picture of my skills, accomplishments, and character through a personal Web site or "Online Portfolio."
Within 1 month of the completion of my Online Portfolio I began receiving requests for interviews from Nashville television programs, Television news stations, and MTV. Within a grand total of 6 weeks I secured my present position as a Multi-Media Director while having to turn down 4 other job offers.
Since 2008 I have been refining my approach and helping friends and acquaintances in assorted career searches. Their success has been remarkable.
Beginning in January of 2009 I began offering these services to the public through my website http://www.Jolapa.com
It is not easy to stand out from the crowd, but an Online Portfolio can make it happen.
Visit us at Job Launch Pad, drop us a line or give us a call for your first free 1 on 1 consultation at no cost to you.
Please also visit our brand new job market forum at http://www.Jolapa.com/forum
Great idea! Not many people
Great idea! Not many people know how to start an online portfolio so this would definitely help with exposure.
I got laid off and it took 6 months for me to find something. For any unemployed job seekers who haven't conquered the online porfolio yet, check out fixthisresume@yahoo.com. They offered lay off discounts for their quality services. Enjoy!
I'll check it out.
If it costs money (over $30), though, I'm going to go ahead and recommend that people not do it. If you want an "online portfolio," get a free Wordpress or Blogger blog, choose a nice theme, and build your brand.

It is distressing to hear about worsening unemployment figures, but this time when we need to think outside the box, and produce innovative new ideas.

I'm with you...
... I've been saying since before the recession began that we will come out of this for the better.

Your competition...
Chuck first off, let me say thanks to you for your site and service to this community.
Secondly, thanks for challenging me and our services, I welcome it.
Now...since I gave you your chance, please allow me my chance to be your competition....
http://www.JobLaunchPad.com
We at Job Launch Pad are graduates from prestigious universities with degrees in Communications, Marketing, and Management. We have certified copywriters on our staff who have post graduate work in copy editing and copy writing.

We are not done with you until you are satisfied with your products.

We take who you are and what your skills are and show case them in a way that employers can't ignore.
We don't change you, we display you in a way that makes you unique and stand out from your competition.
Above even that...our staff is not seeking employment while they are working for you, they are focused on giving you the best services possible, Chuck here is not employed and can't give you the same attention we can. He also can't give you unlimited free consultations over the phone at no cost to you...we can.
Simply put, this is the .com era and a Resume Web site puts you at the head of the line.
Are you ready to initiate your launch?
Word to the wise, Ryan
Touting your academic credentials in Internet discussions is a faux pas and has been since before the Web existed. I remember people being flamed on the good ol' Usenet for bragging about their schools. Back then, just being on the Internet usually meant that you had some association with a prominent institution of higher education. It makes you look kind of foolish to say that you offer professional copywriting when your writers make errors like this:
http://joshrichardsresume.wordpress.com/resume/
It's résumé, not "resumé." Your work speaks for itself and demeans your credentials if it is not up to par. (That's not the only boneheaded copywriting error I found, by the way. You misspelled "possessing" on your "About Us" page, which kind of degrades your prestigious degree. That's all the free proofreading I'm doing for you. My services are $60/hr. from here on out.) See how that works?
Anyway, at least you are offering some value for the $200 you charge.
Au contraire, mon frere. If anybody gave me $200 to set them up with a kick-ass web resume, I would let them talk to me on the phone.
When life hands you sh*t, make fertilizer.
Losing Battle?
First of all, you have made your mind up and you do not think our service has value. That is your choice as it is of others I am sure.
You did find some errors on our Web site, I applaud you for your awesome grammatical skills.
Let me also state that I have not had the certified copy editors on my staff since the beginning, which is when Josh's site was built.
He landed a job by the way and he gives full credit to our services. Full time job in his field, paying more than what he needed.
Yes again their is a mistake on the spelling of a word on our Web site, and their could be more, I never even had my copy editors look it over because they are too busy looking over client's materials.
I am not excellent in grammar, let me state that first, that was never my claim. Our services are.
I tout our degree qualifications to prove there is merit to our services, we didn't take some 2 week long resume writers class, we aren't just saying we are good with nothing to back it.
We have education, training, and real world experience.
None of our consultants have ever been fired or let go in their professional career either which helps lend creedence to our staff and our methods.
I understand church that Job Launch Pad is not for you, but it is for many others.
Also we work with people to make the services affordable for them. If we advertised less people would expect to pay less. If they can't pay the full ammount we work it so they can, and most times they get the exact same pacakge.
Thanks for your review Chuck.
You have a great web site here and I wish you and your community well in their job search.
Don't take me wrong, Ryan
I think your service is a great idea, and I wish you well as I do anybody trying to make an honest living in this world.
The strongest steel is forged in the hottest fire, though.
When life hands you sh*t, make fertilizer.
Yes, the strongest steel IS forged in the hottestfire!
